We've really enjoyed our Easter celebrations at Filey Methodist Church this week.  From Roman songs, to Easter poems; Viking longboats to expressive dance; recorder players to poetry writers; we've all had something good to share with our community and each other.  And our Easter bonnets and Easter egg competitions produced some wonderful work.  

Well done everybody"  Have a Happy Easter!

Sewing Club has had a very successful term with Year 5 children.  Our super, smiley sewers and our sunshine sewers have enjoyed making love hearts, cushions and Easter chicks and bunnies.  Watch out next term for some brilliant, colourful ideas.

And a big thank you to Mrs Price and Mrs Birkin for all their help and support - they've had us in stitches!!!

Our girls did a wonderful job this week, playing some wonderful football and really pulling together as a team.  They won games; they lost games; they drew games; but most importantly, they impressed everyone with their team spirit and fair play.  So much so in fact, they were awarded the 'Respect Cup' as recognition of their excellent attitude.  Well done girls!  Keep up the excellent work!

As it was the 1st of December, it was time to start thinking about Christmas, and what better way than with a Christmas Fair?  

Parents, children, friends, staff and of course Father Christmas all turned up for an evening of carols, mince pies and good cheer.  A wide range of gifts, crafts, food and games were on offer and our Carol Singers, led by Mrs Lawson, entertained and helped bring the Christmas feeling to everyone.

A lovely evening which really helped to bring that Christmas feeling to everyone.  Thanks to everyone involved, especially the FoFs who organised the event.

If there's one thing our children aren't in need of, it's buns!  Thanks to our Children In Need bun and cake sale we've raised over £150 to help children less fortunate than ourselves.  A massive thank you to everyone who donated to this event, and the children looked wonderful in their 'Spotty Dress'.

Our good friend Bernard visited school this week to deliver a very important road safety message through the use of poetry.  All of our children had the opportunity to listen, create and perform poetry with a road safety message.  A fun day, with a very serious message - well done everyone and thankyou Bernard and Mr Santon for your time and effort.

What a fantastic night we had when the ghost, ghouls, goblins and witches all came to our school disco!  Following the success of last year's event, it was time for Spooky-Doo Two, and this year it was even bigger and better.  Thanks as always to our DJ's - Adam and Mark, and to all the Friends of Filey Junior School for all their hard work.

A BIG thank you to everyone who donated and supported our Harvest Festivals this year.  This is the first year we've held a Harvest Festival in quite a long time and it was very well received by both parents and children alike.  Our friends at Filey Methodist Church have been very accomodating and we look forward to many more events in the future.

The Rainbow Centre in Scarborough have been very greatful for all the wonderful donations given as part of our Harvest.  I know the produce will have been enjoyed by those who find themselves in difficult circumstances.  Thank you for your generosity.

As part of the improvements to school dinners, we have asked the children to suggest a new name and logo for our ‘canteen’.  There were a wide range of ideas and many of these could have easily been chosen.  In the end however, our judges picked three entries which were all very similar.  The name and logo for our dining hall will be an amalgamation of the three winning entries – Sunshine Canteen (Oliver T); Sunrise Café (Jacob B); Junior Diner (Paige B).  I am therefore proud to reveal, school dinners will now be served in the…“Sunrise Diner”.

Please look out for the pound note tokens printed in the Scarborough Evening News between now and 22nd October.  If we collect the most (based on average number per pupil) we could win £3000!

And Don't forget the Morrisons vouchers for schools.  Please ask your family / friends / neighbours to help collect these as they have provided some excellent resources for gardening and cookery in the past.

All of our chidren have been producing portraits to line the walls of our corridor and classrooms.  A range of styles and media were used.  There are some real masterpieces.  Can you guess who?

We are now offering a weekly parent and child Zumba session every Wednesday evening (starting 28^th September) from 3:30pm until 4:30pm.  If you and your child would like to attend, please call in to school.  Please note, at the moment the sessions will only be available to one parent / carer and a child from our school, attending and joining in together.  Unfortunately, we can not allow younger children to attend.  If there are enough places, available at a later date we will look to open this up to other adults and children.  No prior knowledge or experience of Zumba is required for these sessions as our tutor, Zoe, will teach all the moves as part of the session.  There is no charge for this club.

Season 2011 - 2012 of the Friday night Girls' Football club has just kicked off.  Our new Year 3 children are very enthusiastic and we've had a record turn out for the openning of the new season.  Will they be able to match last year's winning teams?  Don't forget, boots and shin pads are essential!  Take a look at last year's video highlights...

Following a very succedful first year, in which our very own Drum Club made several public performance and recorded their first CD (Drum & Drummer - see the Filey Juniors PLC link), we proudly present the very first Drum Club promo video.  Recorded on location in the school hall, the video took almost 30 minutes to shoot and cost over one pound in Wham bars!

Homework club will be starting again from February 7th.

The clubs are held in the computer suite and are an ideal opportunity for your child to complete homework tasks. They have use of computers and this is ideal for them to access websites such as Mathletics.co.uk. The school has purchased full access to this site as we think that it is very good for enhancing mathematical skills and understanding.

We are aware that some children do not have reliable internet access at home and we would especially encourage those children to attend the clubs. Also it is often the case that home computers are very much in demand by other family members and we would like to ensure that computer based homework can be accessed by all the children. However we have found that children are happy to bring a variety of homework tasks to complete at the clubs.

 Presently the club is for Years 5 and 6 children but could possibly be open to Year 4 children if they have not got access to a computer at home.  Please contact the school if you wish your Y4 child to attend.

It's behind you!  Our school has been invaded by a host of pantomime characters form a variety of stories.  Cinderella and her sisters, Alladin, the 7 Dwarves, Jack and a Giant have all been playing a part in our Pantomime!  All the Year 5 & 6 children have been busy learning their lines and the songs for what has been a fantastic performance.  Well done to everyone involved!

There have been some delicious smells coming from the school kitchens recently, and it's not just at lunchtimes!  After school the kitchen is taken over by our very own Master Chefs!  Or Mrs Taylors Cookery Club as it's otherwise known.  This week it was pasta on the menu, but each week it's something new and exciting.  Thanks to Mrs Taylor and all the parents who come to help out.  Now where's my dinner?

Have you seen the Filey Junior School PLC (Pupil Led Company) calendar?  These special calendars were produced using artwork from everyone involved witht the school and can be your for just £3 (two for £5).  As well as the original artwork, the calendar features important school dates for 2011.  Please see a member of Class 9, or the school office, to purchase one!

Since Christmas, an internet resource, MATHLETICS, has been available for your children to use at home and school. It is proving to be very popular and children are improving their mathematics skills as a result.

Some children have told me that they are experiencing difficulties getting it to work at home. Below is a link to a technical guide to (hopefully) solve any problems. Please get in touch with school if we can help further. Please encourage your child to use this resource.

It was a special afternoon when our Year 3 & 4 children performed Ned The Donkey to a packed house of parents and friends.  All the children were involved with the production which saw Ned look for the real meaning of Christmas, visiting toy shops, kitchens and even meeting Santa along the way.  Finally Ned found christmas in a stable and sent everyone home with a smile on their faces and a warm, Christmas feeling.

Unfortunately, our choir will not be performing carols at Tesco this Saturday.  Another victim of the weather.  Hopefully, there will be an opportunity to catch the choir before Christmas.

Strange goings on in the school hall!  We've been invaded by a range of vampires, ghosts, witches and monsters.  The good news is, they're all very friendly and enjoy a good boogie!  Which is just as well as this was our Spooky Doo Halloween Disco!  Thanks to all the FoFs and the staff who made this such a fun night, and a special thank you to Mark and Adam for DJing all evening.  What a night!

Not to be outdone by the boys, our girls team have been playing a tournament of their own.  This time, the girls went home unbeaten in their games, managing to take a place in the second division for the season ahead!  Well done girls, and thanks again to Filey Lions for what has to be the pinkest kit in North Yorkshire!  The girls were all very proud.

Our boys were playing well and looking good at the Scarborough Area football tournament at Bramcote School.  Managing to win, lose and draw, the boys showed real character and teamwork, rotating the goalkeeper's shirt in order to give everyone a fair chance.  The new kit ensured we were the smartest team on the pitch - a big thank you to the Filey Lions for their kind sponsorship!

Please can you ensure your child's dinner money is paid on Monday in an envelope with your childs name, class, which days you are paying for, and how much money is enclosed.

School meals now cost £2.10 a day (£1.90 for younger siblings if older child has 4 or more meals in that week). £10.50 a week or £9.50 a week for siblings.

Payment monthly, 1/2 termly or termly is also acceptable, any absences will be credited.

The Governors of Filey Junior School wish to appoint a Clerk to the Governing Body.  The Clerk will be accountable to the Governing Body, work effectively with the Chair, the Headteacher and other Governors.  The Clerk will be responsible for advising the Governing Body and working within the current legislative framework.  They will be required to prepare and distribute papers, and minute 6 Full Governing Body meetings per year, plus additional committee meetings as required.  Salary: £1,000 per annum.

This week saw the whole school behaving like animals as we jumped into our final charity event of the year - Animal Day for Dogs Trust.  Children came to school dressed as their favourite animal and had the opportunity to do a variety of animal themed activities throughout the day.  There was even 'dog biscuits' available at the tuck shop!  In total we raised over £120 for our third charity of the year - Dogs Trust. 

It's been a great year fo strawberries and potatoes this year!  We've had super size strawberries and pots of potatoes thanks to our resident gardening experts.  But that's not all!  Cabbages, lettuce, onions, leeks and carrots are still bursting out from the allotment areas around school.  We'll soon be self sufficient at this rate!

What a way to mark the beginning of July - our Summer Fair!  From dancing to fire engines, welly wanging to retro arcades, there was something for everyone at this year's Summer Fair.  All the children played their part in organising and running the stalls at the fair.  Staff were fantastic organising the events.  The FoF Juniors were great at getting everything moving and ensuring the day went smoothly.  Well done everyone and a massive £1200 raised towards play equipment for the children.

Following the success of the dancers, our school choir took their turn to entertain the crowds.  Singing a range of songs that included well known hits from musicals past and present, the choir couldn't fail to impress.  In a performance which lasted almost an hour and included many solos, Mrs Lawson led the children to a wonderful performance.  Well done children and thank you Mrs Lawson.

Our children were out in force entertaining the crowds at Filey Town Festival this week.  The Country Dancers were a real hit, not putting a foot wrong as they performed their well rehearsed dances.  There was even an opportunity for the crowds to join in.  Look out for them again this Friday!

Who needs the World Cup or the Olympic Games when you can catch some real sporting talent at the Filey Junior School Sports Day?  We had brilliant weather and a great turn out of parents, friends and Governors.  The children performed extremely well and supported each other in every event.  Let's hope the weather stays good for the Summer Fair! 

Many children stayed after school to watch the England v Slovenia match. There was a fantastic atmosphere and thankfully the result went England's way!

Thanks to Friends of Filey Junior School for running a successful Tuck Shop.

Sadly Mr Mirfin has decided to leave Filey Junior School at the end of this term. He has been an outstanding Teacher who has played a very active role in school life over the past 23 years. During that time he has run various school clubs Football, Rugby,Cross-Country, Science and of course Cricket to name but a few, he has directed a plethora of school productions and organised many sporting activities as well as sports days.

Staff and pupils will miss him immensely.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward thinking teacher to join our team.  This is an exciting opportunity which will involve working with a Year 5 / 6 Class and supporting SEN children across the school.  As this is a varied role, experience of teaching across the primary age range and working with children with SEN is an essential. 

The Post is full-time and initially a one year fixed-term.  Successful applicants will be subject to enhanced CRB checks.

Children have been busy developing their gardening skills with Mrs Taylor after school. We have been planting potatoes, lettuce, onions and leeks,  We are looking forward to sampling our home grown produce.

On Thursday 20th May, 42 children had a very enjoyable morning watching the Queen opening Scarborough's Open Air Theatre. Everyone enjoyed the performances and joined in with the singing and dancing!

The first ever Filey Junior School Barn Dance was a great success!  Thanks to the FoF Juniors, parents, children and friends were able to dance the night away with live music provided by the Pied Piper Band.  Everyone enjoyed the Pie and Pea supper cooked by Mrs Colling and Mrs Cusick.  If only we all knew our left from our right, we may have even danced in time! 

Our Y5 / Y6 girls football team have been very busy recently.  Having reached the semi-final of the Scarborough & District Cup, they faced Scarborough College.  After a very busy and hard fought game, neither side could find the goal and the game went to extra time.  Unfortunately, Scarborough College were just too strong and managed to grab a goal in the second period of extra time.  Good luck to them in the final!

With only a few days rest, the girls then went to Barrowcliffe to play in the league ladder.  Having just been promoted to the Premiership, the girls were facing some tough opposition.  Despite this being their first time in the league, the girls managed a win against Friarage, but lost games to Gladstone Road, Hunmanby and Barrowcliffe.  A disappointing end result, but everyone enjoyed the experience and considering this is the girl's first season, they've done incredibly well.  We're very proud of how well they've played and their strong team spirit and sportsmanship.

We're all looking forward to next season now and we are also looking to secure a sponsor for our new kit.  If you, or someone you know, owns a business and would like the opportunity for some publicity, please contact us at school.  A full kit is around £300, but this could be split amongst sponsors.

Next up, it's the Year 3 & 4 girls.

Tickets are now on sale for the first ever Filey Junior School Barn Dance priced at £6.50 for adults and £3.50 for children.  The evening will include live music from the Pied Piper Band and a pie & pea supper.  Don't worry if you've got two left feet - one of the band members will be calling out instruction to get everyone in time.  So dust down those dancing cowboy boots and get ready for Friday 14th May.  What better way to celebrate the end of SATs week?  See the FoF Juniors section for more details.

Walking around school today, you would have been forgiven for thinking you had walked in to a sports and physical activity centre.  It seemed like everyone was running, jumping, cycling, throwing or dancing.  From Freddy Fit to Cycling Proficiency to Tag Rugby, everyone (including the teachers) was getting healthy and doing some exercise.  And that was just the morning!

Our Girl's football team were in action last night (22nd April) playing Newby Primary School in the quarter finals of the Scarborough District Cup.  An early goal for our team made for a great start and the girls defended well to ensure they went in to half-time with a one goal lead.  In the second half it was Newby who took advantage and managed to equalise, setting up an action packed second half.  It looked like it was going to go to extra time until a great run and cross by Cara set up an easy tap in for our forwards. 

A great match and a great result.  Well done girls!  Now it's semi-final time.

Strange structures have appeared on the school field, as the staff and children planted some willow hideouts on the last day of the Spring Term.  It was learning experience for everyone and by the end we were becoming experts in willow sculpture.  We're now hoping for some rain and looking forward to seeing our shelters grow.  Check back soon for updates.

Thankfully, the April Fool's Disco wasn't an April Fool and everyone had a chance for a good end of term dance.  There were some interesting costumes including pink fairies, pyjamas, clowns and surfers - and that was just the teachers!

Spring has arrived and with it comes the new flowers.  Not Daffodils and Bluebells this year however, but wire flowers!  The children have been busy sculpting flowers from 1 meter lengths of flowers.  They bounce and are definitely springy!  Thank you to Mrs Westmoreland and Mrs Bosomworth for all their work in getting the flowers planted.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Easter Services at Filey Methodist Church.  Although we had to brave the elements, arriving at Church a little damp, we still managed to brighten up Easter with our songs and celebrations.  Thank you to Rev. Kirkman for making the Easter story come to life.

Extended Schools Holiday Activities.

There are various activities planned for the easter holidays organised by Filey Extended Schools. (See the Extended Schools link on the left).

If your child is in reciept of free school meals you are entitled to  Me Too! vouchers allowing your child a 75% discount on the cost of the activities.

If you think your child is entitled to free school meals but you do not claim this entitlement at the moment, please contact the school for an application form.

We were out in force today to support Sports Relief by running a mile along the beach!  Every child in the school came ready for action, dressed in their trainers and sports gear.  We were also joined by lots of parents, family and friends which made a lovelyatmosphere.  Thanks to everyone who turned out and helped us to raise almost £300!

This week have been visiting York Castle Museum as part of our work on the Victorians.  We walked along a Victorian street, filled with shops, sights and sounds. We went to school in the Victorian school room and had to learn our 3R's.  We did some drill in the middle of the street.  And we had our lunch - in prison!  The whole school enjoyed the experience but we're happy to return to the 21st Century.

We currently have two Teaching Assistant vacancies available at our school.  The first post is for a General Teaching Assistant (32hpw term time) to provide classroom support and complete general admin' duties. 

The second post is for an Advanced Teaching Assistant (12hpw over 4 afternoons).  This post will involve planning and delivering intervention programmes for individuals and small groups of children.  Relevant qualifications and experience are required.

Due to relocations and work comitments, we now have vacancies for 3 Community Governors.  

Community governors are appointed by the governing body to represent community interests. Community governors can be people who live or work in the community served by the school, or people who do not work or live close to the school but are committed to the good governance and success of the school.

If you would like more information about these roles, or about the school's governing body, please call in to school or ask to speak to a member of the governing body.

World Book Day and Puffin Book Club.

To help celebrate World Book Day all the children have been given a voucher worth £1.

We are running the Puffin Book club and the children can use their voucher towards payment. Years 5 and 6 have already got their leaflets and Years 3 and 4 will get their leaflets week commencing 8th March. Alternatively you can order online at www.puffinbookclub.co.uk using our account number 7192582. Please return any orders by Friday 19th March with a cheque or card details filled in on the order form. (No cash please).

This is very beneficial to the school as we get 50% commision of the total spent by parents. So it is a great way to increase the class reading libraries.

Well done to all who took part in World Maths Day, at home and at school. For over a day, due to time zones, we competed with children from all over the world in quickfire mental maths competitions on the internet. The event created a real buzz around school as children aimed to answer more correct answers than their classmates!

Tesco for Schools Vouchers.

We are once again collecting Tesco for Schools vouchers.

You can collect vouchers instore from Monday 1st March to Sunday 9th May. Our collection box will be in the main school corridor.

Last year we collected over 6000 vouchers which enabled us to 'buy' a variery of musical instruments, including steel drums, hand bells, chime bars and Boomwhackers.

Help us make this our best year yet by collecting and sending in your vouchers.

Thank you to all the parents who attended Mr Grice's Maths Awareness Evening.  There was a lot of discussion and a lot of opportunity to try some calculations the 'new' way.  As promised, although a little later than planned, the presentation from the evening can be downloaded below.  This is a great resource for helping you to help your child with maths.  Note: MS Powerpoint is required to run the presentation and you will need to click the 'READ ONLY' button when it asks for a password. 

Please be aware that Muston Road is closed due to Yorkshire Water roadworks. This will be in force until at least May 2010. If you need to get to Filey Junior School you will need to enter Filey using Scarborough Road.

Despite the rain and the cold, our year 3 children have been out and about on the streets around school learning some valuable road safety lessons.  They stopped; they looked; they listened; they got wet!  And they learnt how to stay safe on the road.

There was a surprise in store for one of our pupils last week when a special guest came for dinner.  In fact Cameron was so delighted he's written his own article:

North Yorkshire Champ Upon Us!

Cameron, Class 5 pupil (Tutor Mr. J. Logue), won a competition hosted by North Yorkshire School Meals Association.  Cameron won a Beijing Olympic shirt signed by Tom Daley (world champion diver).  Cameron won it by asking Tom a question (what is it like being so high up?).   People from all over the county entered and the best question won.  It came down to Cameron!

Cameron was shocked when he found out in front of everyone in the dinner hall - he couldn’t speak (for the first time ever).

Once again we are collecting Sainsburys active kids 2010 vouchers.

The scheme runs from 17th February to 8th June.

Last year we were able to use the vouchers to 'buy' lots of great equipment which is used at lunchtimes in the playground.

So get collecting and help us make this our best year yet!

On Tuesday 26th January our Year 5 & 6 swimming team entered the Scarborough and District Swimming Festival.  This was our first time at this event so we were a little unsure about what to expect.  The great news is... we won our division!  Now we can't wait for the next one!  Big thanks to Filey Lions for helping us with transport to and from Scarborough.

There have been some exciting finds in Mr Drewell's class this week as the class go prehistoric and start looking at fossils.  The children talked fossils, looked at fossils, played with fossils, made fossils by designing a clay mould and filling it with plaster and finally wrote a set of instructions for others to follow should they wish to make their own.  Lots of smiles and happy faces were also discovered!

Well done to everyone who took part in the Scarborough & District Cross Country events this year.  The final race was on Saturday 16th January at a very cold and very wet Scarborough College.  Our runners braved the elements and brought home 4 trophies in all: Year 5 / 6 Girls Team (3rd place); Year 3 / 4 Boys Team (3rd place); and two individual 3rd places.  Well done and a big thank you to Mr Mirfin, Mrs Mills and Mrs Bosomworth for getting cold and wet and helping to organise our team.

What a wonderful production!  The Year 5 & 6 children performed a version of a Christmas Carol to celebrate the festive season.  And when Scrooge returned to his past to see himself in the Nativity, who should be there but our Year 3 & 4 children. 

This production involved everyone in the school and was a launch event for the newly formed Friends of Filey Junior School who managed to raise over £850 which will be spent on providing new curtains for the stage. 

Thank you to everyone - this was a magical event and one which will be remembered for a long time to come.
